ICE Response Training
Resolution 5363 (Rights of Undocumented Students and Protocols for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Access to Schools) made it so that the Superintendent had to develop a plan to train teachers and other PPS personnel on how to respond to ICE personnel and to communicate the plan to all PPS families. This was to be completed by February 15, 2017.
The only related Resolution to be passed was in 2018, Resolution 5722 - Resolution in Opposition to Measure 105: Measure to Repeal the Law limiting Use of Local Law Enforcement Resources to Enforce Federal Immigration Laws.
No Resolutions on the subject have been passed since, though communications have been made to families, which are summarized below.
On January 31, then Superintendent McKean made a statement claiming staff would present to the Board in February on ICE response, which potentially fulfill the request for a plan by February 15. He also assured the community that staff trainings would teach the new policies.
A follow-up statement by the Superintendent on February 24 provided updates on the policy. The statement mentioned working with principals but there was no discussion of new training for teachers.
Information on staff trainings is difficult to find, and has not yet been found. There is no evidence of the promised February presentation to the Board.
